Small Farms Tour with the Master Gardener Association (Monthly meeting and educational opportunity)
When: Tuesday, June 3rd 2014, 6:00pm-8:00pm
Where: Start at Great Northern Organic Farm (6245 Hodge Rd, Kingsley, MI-see map), and then move four miles to the Morganic Farm (8040 M 113 E, Fife Lake, MI 49633-see map) at 6:45pm.
Who: Free for MGANM members, $10 suggested donation for the public
What: We have the opportunity to tour BOTH Great Northern Organics and the Morganic Farm, which are only a few miles apart and both run by current MG trainees who are excited to volunteer and share their work.
Great Northern Organic Farm – features a 72’ x 30’ seasonal high tunnel that is part of a study on extending the local growing season, plus a variety of on-going soil, water and wildlife habitat projects. Possible production run of organic meat chickens.
Morganic Farm – features a 1/6th of an acre CSA garden, laying chickens,pastured heritage pork, broilers, turkeys, meat & fiber rabbits, and dairy goats, with exciting plans for growth this coming season into firewood production, MAEAP certification, and more. The farm is slowly shifting over to a design built on topographical contour lines.

Garden Walk with The Friendly Garden Club of TC

Who: Open to the public!
Presented by: The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City
What: Have you ever driven by homes in downtown Traverse City and wondered what their yards look like? This is your chance to see for yourself! Details on this event will be hosted on The Friendly Garden Club’s website (click the link above), and will be added here as they are updated. Keep your eyes peeled for this one-of-a-kind event, which is also a great way to meet gardeners from other groups.

Canning/Food Preservation
When: Tuesday, August 5th 2014, 6:30pm (Master Gardeners will hold a potluck at 6pm with a chance to meet and discuss their projects with one another prior to the program)
Where: Boardman River Nature Center, 1450 Cass Road, Traverse City, MI (see map)
Who: Free for MGANM members, $10 suggested donation for the public
Presented by: Jennifer Berkey, Extension Educator with Michigan State University Extension
What: Learn about how to safely preserve foods this summer with an overview of all the different preservation methods. Boiling water canning, pressure canning, freezing and drying principles will be discussed. Research-based materials and how to utilize safe recipes will be shared along with best practices to preserve the wonderful Northern Michigan bounty.

Hands On Pruning Workshop!

Presented by: Brian Zimmerman of Brian Zimmerman & Associates Landscapes
What: Join us at this hands on workshop to learn or sharpen your shrub pruning techniques. Brian will give a brief discussion and demonstration, then allow us to break into smaller groups for hands on experience. Bring your pruners!!

Roofs Alive! Green (Vegetated) Rooftops for Northwest Michigan

What: Nathan Griswold, ASLA, GRP the President of Inhabitect, LLC has played a role in the design and development of nearly 1,000 green roofs across North America. He will walk attendees through what a green roof is, why they are beneficial and how they are utilized. He will also provide examples of what to consider when designing or building a green roof of your own.

Annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner
When: SUNDAY, November 9th 2014, 1:00pm (time subject to change)
Where: Gilbert Lodge, 6800 North Long Lake Road, Traverse City, MI 49684 (follow link for map & directions)
Who: All are welcome!
What: Join us in recognizing our hard working volunteers! Traditionally this event is a dinner-style catered event. All Master Gardeners are welcome to attend, and are encouraged to bring friends and family members. Awards are given for outstanding service for Benzie, Grand Traverse, and Leelanau counties, as well as other special awards. Newly certified Master Gardeners are recognized, as well as those who have achieved Advanced Master Gardener status. Additionally, a silent auction is held every year with the proceeds going toward the Master Gardener student certification Scholarship Fund. The fund is available to assist selected students with covering the financial cost of the Master Gardener course. If you would like to assist with the organization of this event, please contact our Michigan State University Extension Coordinator, Matthew Bertrand.
